On Sunday 4th October, we will be enjoying our last National Garden Scheme (NGS) open day of 2015.
October is a fantastic time to visit our gardens. They are bursting with colour and make the perfect photo opportunity.
If you haven’t visited one of our NGS open days before, you may not know these interesting facts about our gardens:
- Our Italian Garden may look as if it has always been there but when Elite Hotels purchased Tylney Hall this part of the garden was home to two tarmac tennis courts. When we discovered the remains of the original fountain the decision was made to reconstruct the garden to its former glory.
- The water from our Boathouse Lake originally provided Tylney Hall with its water supply, which was pumped across to the Water Towers in the Dutch Garden and Kitchen Garden.
- You can enjoy one of the longest uninterrupted vistas in Hampshire at Tylney Hall. If you are ever driving on the A303, joining the M3, look out for our Giant Redwoods that can be seen on the highest point of the horizon.
- For those of you that are a fan of our outdoor swimming pool, you may be surprised to learn that this area was once a formal Dutch Garden, full of ornate statues and figurines. The outdoor pool was put in place long before Tylney Hall was a hotel and although we are sad to have lost this area of the garden, we do love our pool.
- Although our orchard is considerably smaller than it once was, we still have over 20 varieties of apples.
- The complete opposite to our more formal Italian Gardens are our Water Gardens, originally designed by the renowned horticulturist and garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.
- If you walk to the end of our vista you will discover an air raid shelter, built during the Second World War.
- Our beautiful Glasshouses are listed buildings in their own right and pre-date the existing Tylney Hall (1876).
- If you stand between our carpark and Chestnut Suite you will see the main avenues of Chestnut and Lime trees, that based on the gardens of Versailles, Patte d’oie (goose foot) design.
- Tylney Hall is set within 66 acres of gardens, tended by myself and my team of four experienced gardeners.
