From the 23rd - 31st May, just in time for the Bank Holiday Weekend, we will be joining in the celebrations for English Wine Week. Each year the English and Welsh wine industry campaigns to raise awareness for English wine across the country with a wide range of events and promotions. We are certainly wine lovers at Tylney Hall and are particularly keen to showcase many of the fantastic wines England has to offer. We would love to take this opportunity to share with you a few interesting facts that you may not know about the English & Welsh wine industry.
- It is widely acknowledged that the Romans introduced wine to England and recent archaeological investigations in Northamptonshire have uncovered evidence to suggest that vineyards were established on a commercial scale during the Roman occupation
- Over 25 white and red grape varieties are produced throughout England
- Of these grape varieties, the top three planted in the England are: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Bacchus
- Across England and Wales there are 470 vineyards and 135 wineries
- On average, every year 3.1m bottles of wine are produced in England
- 3,880 acres across England & Wales are dedicated to wine production
- 66% of the wine produced in England is Sparkling. In the last 15 years English sparkling wines have won 8 Trophies for Best International Sparkling Wine and 4 Trophies for Best Sparkling Rose in Global Competitions – no other country has achieved this
